Materuni Waterfall & Coffee Tour
A short hike through Chagga farmland to a dramatic waterfall, paired with a hands-on tour of a family coffee farm — pick, roast, and grind your own cup the traditional way.
Moshi is more than a stopover before Kilimanjaro. Waterfall hikes through coffee farms, natural hot springs, Chagga cultural walks, and a lively market town at the mountain's foot — here's the complete guide to making the most of it. Updated for the 2026/2027 season.
Welcome to Moshi
Moshi sits at roughly 890 metres on Kilimanjaro's southern foothills, a relaxed, walkable town of tree-lined streets, a busy central market, and coffee farms climbing the slopes just beyond the edge of town. It's best known internationally as the main gateway for Kilimanjaro climbs, but it holds up easily as a destination on its own.
The surrounding countryside is Chagga territory — an agricultural people known for centuries-old banana-and-coffee farming techniques, and for the network of waterfalls, forest trails, and village paths that make for some of the best half-day and full-day tours in northern Tanzania. Add nearby natural swimming holes, a crater lake on the Kenyan border, and easy access to Arusha National Park, and Moshi earns two or three days on its own merits.
It works well for pre- or post-climb acclimatization days, as a lower-key alternative to Arusha before or after a safari, and for travelers who want an authentic look at Tanzanian small-town life without an overly touristy feel.
The best things to do
From half-day walks to full-day excursions, these are the experiences that keep visitors extending their Moshi stay.
A short hike through Chagga farmland to a dramatic waterfall, paired with a hands-on tour of a family coffee farm — pick, roast, and grind your own cup the traditional way.
Clear, warm natural springs shaded by fig trees roughly an hour from town — a genuinely relaxing swim spot and a favorite post-climb recovery outing.
Walk through Marangu or Kidia village with a local guide to see traditional underground cave homes, banana-beer brewing, and centuries-old agroforestry techniques still in daily use.
A taste of the mountain without committing to a full climb — walk the Marangu Route's rainforest section to Mandara Hut and back, a great pre-climb leg-tester or standalone outing.
A strikingly blue crater lake straddling the Kenya-Tanzania border, roughly an hour from Moshi — kayak the still water or simply take in the rim-top views.
Explore the clock tower, the bustling central market for spices and fabric, and small local cafes serving some of the country's best coffee, grown just up the road.
A compact but rewarding park with giraffe, buffalo, and colobus monkeys, plus canoeing on the Momella Lakes — an easy day safari from Moshi without committing to a longer circuit.
A quiet patch of indigenous forest just outside town, good for birdwatching and a gentle walk without the crowds — an easy add-on to a coffee or waterfall day.
Guided rides through farmland and forest trails on the mountain's lower slopes, with the option to extend into a longer countryside route for stronger riders.
Beyond the town
Moshi's location makes it a workable base for several worthwhile day trips beyond its own immediate surroundings. Arusha National Park is the standout, roughly two hours away and easy to combine with a stop in Arusha town itself. Lake Chala and the Kikuletwa hot springs both sit within about an hour's drive and pair naturally with a half-day coffee or cultural tour on the same trip.
For travelers with more time, the Usambara Mountains further south offer cooler-climate hiking and a genuinely different landscape, though this is more realistically an overnight excursion than a single day trip from Moshi.
~2 hrs away. Giraffe, buffalo, colobus monkeys, and canoeing on the Momella Lakes.
~1 hr away. A striking crater lake on the Kenya border, good for kayaking or a viewpoint stop.
~1 hr away. Warm, clear natural pools shaded by fig trees, popular for post-climb recovery.
A coffee region, not just a mountain town
Kilimanjaro's fertile southern slopes have grown Arabica coffee since German colonial plantations were established in the late 1800s, and small-scale Chagga farms have carried that tradition forward ever since.
| Experience | Duration | What it involves | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Materuni Coffee Tour | 3–4 hrs | Farm visit, hand-roasting, grinding, waterfall hike combined | First-time visitors, combined half-day |
| Kidia or Marangu farm visit | 2–3 hrs | Smaller-scale, quieter farm tour with a Chagga family | Those wanting a less-touristy version |
| Moshi town coffee shops | 1 hr+ | Cupping and tasting sessions at local cafes | Travelers short on time |
| Coffee lodge stays | Overnight | Working coffee estates with guest accommodation on the mountain's lower slopes | Longer stays, deeper immersion |
Planning your visit
Most international visitors fly into JRO, about 45 minutes from Moshi. Arusha is roughly 90 minutes away by road, and Dar es Salaam is reachable by bus or a short domestic flight.
Late June through October and late December through mid-March bring the clearest views of Kilimanjaro and the most comfortable walking conditions. April and May see the heaviest rains.
Central Moshi has a wide range of guesthouses and hotels within walking distance of the market; coffee lodges on the outskirts offer a quieter, greener base with mountain views.
Tanzanian shillings are standard for local purchases; US dollars are widely accepted for tours, park fees, and larger hotel bills. ATMs are readily available in town.
In their words
"We only planned one extra day before our climb and ended up staying three. The Materuni waterfall and coffee tour alone was worth the detour."
"Chemka hot springs after summiting was exactly what we needed. Clear warm water, shady trees, hardly anyone else there on a weekday."
"The Chagga village walk near Marangu was the most memorable afternoon of our whole Tanzania trip, and we'd done Serengeti the week before."
