Tarangire National Park takes its name from the Tarangire River, which cuts through the park and becomes its lifeline every dry season. As surrounding water sources shrink, wildlife — especially elephants — converges on the riverbanks in numbers rarely matched elsewhere in Tanzania.
The park's other signature feature is visual: ancient baobab trees, some many centuries old, rise out of golden grassland in scenes that have become some of the most photographed in East African safari. Beyond elephants, Tarangire also holds healthy populations of lion, leopard, and one of the country's highest densities of breeding birds.

Tarangire sits closest to Arusha of the four main Northern Circuit parks, making it a natural first or last stop on most itineraries — either easing you into the safari experience at the start of your trip, or providing a strong closing chapter on the way back.

What to expect
A typical Tarangire day
Most Tarangire visits open with an early morning game drive, when temperatures are coolest and predator activity is highest. The drive typically follows the Tarangire River, where elephant herds — sometimes numbering in the hundreds during peak dry season — gather to drink and bathe.
A midday break at your lodge or a picnic spot avoids the hottest hours, before an afternoon drive that often heads toward the park's swamp areas or termite-mound-studded plains, both good for cats and general plains game. Many itineraries include a second Tarangire morning before moving on to the next park.
