Nyerere National Park was created in 2019 from the northern section of the former Selous Game Reserve, one of the largest protected areas ever established on the continent. At roughly 30,000 square kilometres, it remains Africa's largest connected wilderness, threaded through by the Rufiji River and its network of channels, lakes, and floodplains.
What sets Nyerere apart isn't just its size — it's the range of ways to experience it. Alongside conventional game drives, Nyerere permits boat safaris along the Rufiji and walking safaris on foot with an armed ranger, both far more restricted in the Northern Circuit's busier parks. Add genuinely low visitor numbers, and it's possible to spend days here without seeing another vehicle.
The flagship of the Southern Circuit
Nyerere is almost always the anchor of a Southern Circuit itinerary, usually paired with Ruaha. Its combination of accessibility by light aircraft, activity variety, and genuine wilderness makes it the natural starting point for travellers exploring Tanzania's south.

Three ways to explore Nyerere
Traditional 4x4 game drives cover Nyerere's woodland and open plains, following the same format as elsewhere in Tanzania. But the park's real distinction is what's available beyond the vehicle.
Boat safaris put you at water level on the Rufiji, drifting close to hippo pods and basking crocodiles while birdlife works the shoreline. Walking safaris, led by an armed ranger and a guide, slow the pace right down — tracking, reading signs, and experiencing scale and detail a vehicle simply can't offer.

Logistics
Getting to Nyerere
Most visitors fly into Nyerere on a light-aircraft charter from Dar es Salaam, landing at a bush airstrip close to their camp, typically 45 minutes to just over an hour in the air. Flights are usually included as part of the package itinerary.
Road access exists but adds significant travel time compared to flying, so it's rarely used for standard itineraries, particularly when Nyerere is being combined with Ruaha or Katavi in the same trip.
