What is the Northern Circuit

The long way around — and the surest way up

"More days at altitude beats every other variable on this mountain. The Northern Circuit simply has more of them than any other route."

Launched in 2012, the Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro's newest and longest official route. It follows the same approach as the Lemosho Route through rainforest and the Shira Plateau, then diverges to loop around the mountain's remote northern slopes — terrain almost no other route touches — before rejoining the Southern Circuit near Barafu for the summit push.

Because it spends more days at altitude than any other itinerary, the Northern Circuit has the highest summit success rate of any standard Kilimanjaro route, alongside the quietest trail conditions on the entire mountain. It's built for climbers who want the fullest possible tour of Kilimanjaro's terrain and the best realistic odds of reaching Uhuru Peak, and who have the extra time and budget a nine- or ten-day trip requires.

A near-complete circuit

Unlike routes that approach and summit from largely one side of the mountain, the Northern Circuit genuinely circles a large portion of Kilimanjaro's base before turning toward the summit — hence the name. Wildlife sightings, including buffalo and elephant sign at lower elevations, are more common here than on any other route.

Weighing it up

Who the Northern Circuit is — and isn't — right for

This is the route to choose when time and budget aren't the limiting factor and you want the best the mountain has to offer.

Good reasons to choose the Northern Circuit
  • You want the highest realistic summit success rate of any Kilimanjaro route
  • You have nine to ten days available and want to make the most of the trip
  • You want the quietest trail conditions on the entire mountain
  • You're drawn to seeing the most complete picture of Kilimanjaro's varied terrain
  • You're celebrating a milestone climb and want the fullest possible experience
Reasons to consider another route instead
  • Budget is the primary constraint — this is the most expensive standard route
  • You have limited vacation time — consider Lemosho's 7- or 8-day itinerary instead
  • You want a shorter, more budget-focused climb — Machame or Rongai fit better
  • Extended multi-day trekking stamina is a concern — this is the longest sustained itinerary on the mountain

Choose your itinerary

9 days or 10 days — which Northern Circuit fits you?

Both itineraries follow the same near-complete loop of the mountain. The 10-day version adds one further acclimatization day for climbers wanting the maximum possible odds or a more relaxed pace.

The route, mapped

A gentle, extended climb around the mountain

The Northern Circuit's elevation gain is spread more gradually than any other route, with a long traverse across the northern slopes between roughly 3,900 and 4,200 metres before the final push toward summit night.

How hard is it

Difficulty and fitness requirements

The Northern Circuit is not technically difficult — no scrambling, ropes, or climbing gear are required, and the daily gradient is gentle and gradual, spread across the longest itinerary of any route. No prior high-altitude experience is necessary.

The main demand is sustained multi-day trekking stamina rather than any single hard day. Nine or ten consecutive days of walking, several at significant altitude, ask more of overall endurance than shorter itineraries do, even though no individual day is unusually strenuous. We recommend building hiking stamina with multi-hour walks over uneven terrain for two to three months before your climb.

01
Gradient

The most gradual of any route — elevation gain spread across the longest standard itinerary on the mountain.

02
Technical difficulty

None — no scrambling, ropes, or climbing gear required anywhere on the route.

03
Endurance demand

The highest of any route, simply due to sustained length — not any single especially hard day.

In their words

What our Northern Circuit climbers say

★★★★★

"Nine days sounded excessive until we were on it. We genuinely felt strong on summit night in a way I don't think would've been true on a shorter route. Worth every extra day."

HELENA V. — NETHERLANDS · SEPTEMBER CLIMB
★★★★★

"We saw buffalo tracks on day four and didn't cross paths with another group for two full days. It felt like a completely different mountain from the one my brother described on Machame."

DAVID O. — KENYA · JULY CLIMB
★★★★★

"This was our honeymoon climb and we wanted the best possible chance of summiting together. Both of us made it to Uhuru Peak without a single bad moment on the whole trip."

Expert answers

Frequently asked questions

  • The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro's longest and newest official route, launched in 2012. It follows the Lemosho Route's approach before looping around the mountain's remote northern slopes, the quietest and least-visited terrain on Kilimanjaro, before joining the Southern Circuit for the summit push.
  • At nine or ten days, the Northern Circuit gives climbers more time at altitude before summit night than any other standard route, which is the single largest factor in summit success. Industry figures put its success rate at roughly 95 percent or higher, the best of any itinerary on the mountain.
  • The Northern Circuit is typically climbed over nine days, with a ten-day version available that adds a further acclimatization day for climbers wanting the maximum possible summit odds or a more relaxed pace.
  • For climbers who can commit the extra time and budget, the Northern Circuit offers the highest summit success rate, the quietest trail, and the most complete tour of Kilimanjaro's varied terrain of any route. The trade-off is that it is the longest and most expensive standard itinerary on the mountain.
  • Pricing typically starts around $2,950 per person for a 9-day Standard Camping package and rises to around $5,600 per person for a 10-day Private Premium package. Prices include park fees, camping fees, crew wages, and full board meals on the mountain.
  • Your guide checks blood oxygen twice daily with a pulse oximeter and is trained to spot early symptoms of acute mountain sickness. Mild symptoms are managed with rest, hydration, and pace adjustment; if symptoms escalate, guides descend the climber immediately, regardless of proximity to the summit — a mandatory protocol, not a judgment call.
