The Southern Circuit is the collective name for Tanzania's southern safari parks — principally Nyerere, Ruaha, Katavi, and Mikumi. Together they form Africa's largest connected protected wilderness, a landscape of riverine forest, baobab-studded plains, and open bush that receives only a fraction of the visitor numbers of the Northern Circuit.
What sets it apart isn't just the solitude. Nyerere allows boat safaris along the Rufiji River and walking safaris on foot with an armed ranger, activities that are far more restricted in the north. Ruaha offers some of the largest lion prides left in Africa against a backdrop of ancient baobabs. Katavi, further west and harder to reach, rewards the effort with genuinely wild, rarely-photographed terrain.
Built for a different kind of traveller
This isn't usually a first safari. It suits travellers who've already done a classic Northern Circuit trip, or who know from the outset that they want depth and solitude over guaranteed high-density wildlife sightings. Access typically means a light-aircraft flight rather than a road transfer, which keeps numbers naturally low.

Logistics
Getting to the Southern Circuit
Most Southern Circuit safaris begin with a light-aircraft flight from Dar es Salaam, landing on a bush airstrip inside Nyerere, Ruaha, or Katavi — usually 45 minutes to just over an hour in the air. Flights are typically included in package pricing and booked as part of your itinerary.
Road access exists to Mikumi and, with more effort, to Ruaha, but driving times of six to ten hours make flying the practical choice for most itineraries, especially when combining two or more parks in a single trip.

Nyerere and Ruaha are generally accessible year-round with flights; Katavi is most reliably reached June through October.

Southern Circuit pricing, by tier
Prices are per person, per day, based on a group of two travelling together. All tiers include park fees, a guide, light-aircraft transfers between camps, and full board meals.

There is no budget camping tier in most of the Southern Circuit — remoteness and light-aircraft access keep the entry price higher than the Northern Circuit's cheapest options.
Not included in any tier: international flights, the Tanzania tourist visa (approx. $50), travel and medical insurance, and gratuities for your guide and camp staff (approx. $20–25 per traveller, per day, as a general guideline).
