The Northern Circuit is the collective name for Tanzania's four most-visited safari parks — the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. Clustered north of Arusha and linked by short drives, this region holds the highest concentration of wildlife anywhere in the country, and arguably anywhere in Africa.
It's also, practically speaking, the easiest place to safari. Roads are graded, airstrips are frequent, and lodges range from simple to extraordinary at every price point. For most first-time visitors, this combination of density and convenience makes the Northern Circuit the obvious starting point.
Four parks, one loop
Most itineraries move through the region in a loop: Tarangire or Lake Manyara first, then the Ngorongoro Crater, then the Serengeti for the final and longest stretch. Each park has a genuinely different character, covered park by park below.

Timing your trip to the Great Migration
Over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move in a roughly clockwise loop through the Serengeti ecosystem every year, and the Northern Circuit is where that entire cycle plays out. Where the herds are depends heavily on the month, so travellers chasing a specific moment — a river crossing, the calving season — should plan their dates around it rather than the other way round.
Even outside the migration's peak moments, the Northern Circuit's resident wildlife populations mean sightings remain excellent year-round. The migration is a bonus layered on top of an already wildlife-dense region, not the only reason to come.

Prices are per person, per day, based on a group of two travelling together. All tiers include park fees, a guide and 4x4 vehicle, and full board meals.

Safari packing is simple: neutral colours, layers for cool mornings and hot afternoons, and good optics. No camouflage clothing is needed and it's restricted in some countries nearby.
